Loud booms heard in Jakarta were part of welcoming ceremony for new recruits at Indonesian Air Force base: officials

The public can finally let out a collective sigh of relief as the riddle surrounding mysterious “boom” sounds that were recently heard in parts of East and South Jakarta has finally been solved. While both the public and officials considered that it might have been a natural occurrence, the Indonesian military has now offered an explanation revealing the sounds were manmade.

Indonesian Air Force’s spokesman Fajar Adrianto said the loud booms originated from a military tradition that was carried out at Specialized Forces Corps (Paskhas) base near the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta.

“Yes, [the booms] came from Paskhas, they had an activity and the bomb is not the bomb that can destroy buildings. The TNT [Trinitrotoluene] only produced a blasting sound,” Fajar said yesterday.

“At the Paskhas base they were carrying out a tradition to welcome new recruits. Part of that tradition is waking them up early in the morning, and they are woken up early using that bomb.”

According to Fajar, the colder temperature at night or early morning may have been a factor on why the boom sound could be heard from so far away. He also said that the welcoming event has since concluded, and no more boom sounds should be expected.

Though some experts previously said the boom noises may have been caused by lightning, Deni Septiadi, a Lightning and Atmospheric Researcher at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had suspected that they were not a natural occurrence

However, it’s worth noting that the Indonesian Air Force’s statement seems to only explain the two loud booms heard early yesterday morning, but still doesn’t explain the two boom sounds heard across several areas on Sunday, including Pasar Minggu and Pancoran in South Jakarta, Duren Sawit in East Jakarta, as well as Bekasi, West Java, and Pondok Cabe, South Tangerang between 7:30pm and 8pm that night.
