7 arrested in South Sulawesi for alleged gang rape of university student

Police in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar have arrested seven people who were allegedly involved in the gang rape of a university student last weekend.

The victim, identified as 23-year-old EA, visited a nightclub with her female friend, 21-year-old SN, along with six other men on Saturday night. EA told the police that she wanted to go home after getting drunk, but SN allegedly pushed her to stay overnight in a hotel room that the men had booked.

Officers from the Panakkukang sub-precinct apprehended the six men, whose ages ranged from 20-26 years old, as well as SN, from different locations yesterday. Police then also conducted a reconstruction at the crime scene with the suspects and EA, from which they found evidence that was consistent with the victim’s report.

Police said that the suspects and the victim arrived at the hotel together — with SN leading the heavily intoxicated EA to the hotel room — and that they had intentionally made her drunk before attempting to rape her. The suspects reportedly booked two rooms, one of which was used to rape the victim.

“The seven suspects each had their own respective role, but in fact there were three people who [raped her],” Panakkukang sub-precinct chief Jamal Fathur Rakhman said today.

EA says she was half conscious when she heard a man saying “I want to go first,” which jolted her awake. She was shocked upon seeing a man in front of her, who then ran away with other men who had also been in the room before she gained consciousness.

Jamal also said that EA was initially accompanied by her male friend to the nightclub. When he wanted to take EA home, SN persuaded her to spend the night with the suspects.

“SN convinced the victim that she will take her home later, but apparently she was taken to the hotel.”

Police will be questioning more witnesses and look into other evidence before officially charging the suspects. Under Indonesian law, rape is a crime punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
